ProductsCreative virtuoso Lazi Mathebula, also known as “Greiispaces”, is a Johannesburg-based illustrator, designer and art director. Greiispaces is guy who believes that real creativity involves transforming the ordinary and, in a sense, turning realism on its head. Lazi’s work reflects a recognisable fixation on finer detailing, the intricacies of the purely African stories and a tasteful use of luminous colour to create long-lasting visual impressions.
Inspired by his childhood spent in Joburg’s Alexandra township, Lazi uses his talent to turn perceptions of township art on its head. His sketches of everyday subject matter include everything from shoes to street dogs, and are vibrantly transformed with neon dashes and patterned etchings when they get to his computer. Lazi’s unique style has led him to collaborate with everyone from international athletic-wear companies, to local brand Supreme Being and he was also featured as one of the Design Indaba’s emerging creatives in 2013.
Not just satisfied with creating illustrations and artwork, Lazi moved into the world of fashion and design, becoming a co-creator of the Beautiful Boys fashion label. Having worked closely with Dickies on several collaborations for Beautiful Boys, Lazi is very familiar with the hard-wearing brand. He says what inspires him about Dickies is that-
