Someone once said that the only way to do great work is to love what you do. For Uno July this statement couldn’t be more accurate; this is a man that lives, eats and breathes music. Formerly one half of the hip-hop duo Ill Skillz, Uno July can be thought of as a staple in the South African hip-hop scene. Within the South African music industry he has worked with the likes of Tumi, Proverb, AKA, Reason, Prophets Of The City, Black Coffee, Hugh Masekela, Zaki Ibrahim, Okmalumkoolkat, Prokid and Khuli Chana, as well as with international artists Kendrick Lamar, Lauryn Hill, Mos Def and Pharoehe Monch, to name a few.
Born in Gugulethu, Cape Town, Uno July represents the working-class hero that John Lennon once sang about, with his passion for hip-hop and unfailing dedication to his art. Going solo in 2015, Uno July saw no reason to be complacent and pushed the limits by recording, mixing and mastering his first solo album in 24 hours- Best Kept Secret EP.
Over the years Dickies has found itself a favourite with the hip-hop, street scene in SA because, as Uno July says “music and fashion are blending together, one wouldn’t work without the other.”
