Dickies Story and History

ABOUT DICKIES

Established in 1922 in Fort Worth, Texas, Dickies® was born from grit, hard work, and a no-nonsense approach to functional workwear. The brand’s story began in 1918, when founders C.N. Williamson and E.E. “Colonel” Dickie started a vehicle and harness business, making durable gear for horses. By 1922, they shifted from outfitting workhorses to outfitting workers, creating tough denim bib overalls for ranchers, farmhands, and workers across the Southwest.

HISTORY OF DICKIES

From the factory floor to the streets, Dickies has always been built to last. In the 1930s, the brand grew through the Great Depression while supporting its workers with free meals on the production line. During WWII, Dickies paused consumer production to make nine million heavy-duty twill uniforms for the U.S. war effort. By the 1950s, Texas oil workers had taken Dickies to the Middle East, helping the brand earn its global reputation for tough, dependable workwear.

In 1967, Dickies introduced the iconic 874® work pant. Made from a durable 65% polyester and 35% cotton twill blend, it became a bestseller and remains the brand’s most popular work pant today.

By the late 1980s and 1990s, Dickies moved beyond workwear into street culture. Adopted by hip-hop, West Coast style, and skateboarders, Dickies trousers became a uniform for people who needed gear that could handle real life, real movement, and real attitude.

Today, Dickies continues to build on its legacy of quality workwear made to be worn by everyone. What started as a humble denim bib overall company has grown into a global icon, connecting generations through honest style, everyday durability, and a spirit built to last.
